John Symonds was born in Over in 1930 and educated at the village school and then at the Cambridge and County High School. After National Service in the Army he gained a History degree at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, before qualifying as a teacher.

John taught in Haywards Heath, Sussex and then spent eight years teaching overseas in Malaya and Ghana before returning to the UK in 1965 to become a Lecturer at the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, specialising in War Studies.

In 1971 he was appointed Head of History at Churchers College, Petersfield, remaining there until retirement in 1991. Since then he has spent much time researching Family History and writing an autobiography. He remains an active member of the Historical Association, the Western Front Society (Portsmouth branch) and the Winchester Militaria Society. He now lives in Waterlooville, a few miles north of Portsmouth.
